Food is Medicine

Meals For Moms

Ry’s passion for working with mothers and combined love for food led to the conception of meals for moms, a Postpartum Doula Chef service that prioritizes moms' nutrition during the 4th trimester.

This is not a meal train. This is about feeding Mamas nourishing meals postpartum. Through the use of Ayurveda wisdom, we’ve created a Postpartum Ayurveda Meal Program for the first 42 days.

Ayurveda & Postpartum Nutrition

After birth, Ayurveda recommends 42 days of wholesome warm, fresh, vegetarian meals centered on mung bean kitchari, dal, rice, nut milk and ghee with digestive spices and herbs to boost lactation, support digestion and renewal.

A Doula Chef provides postpartum care through grounding nourishment that builds strong immunity and milk supply so mamas may experience a deeper bond with baby. Mother's milk is directly affected by the quality of nutrition which in-turn affects baby's development. Cleansing Ayurveda foods aid in the 4th trimester transition, giving both mom and baby optimal wellness for a smooth and speedy recovery.

What is Kitchari?

Kitchari is a very gentle anti-inflammatory tridoshic food in Ayurveda. Based in mung beans, they are cleaned, soaked then cooked down in ghee or coconut oil and digestive healing spices with rice. A complete protein, high in fiber, antioxidants and phytonutrients, resets your internal rhythm, improves metabolic function and strengthens digestive fire (agni).

  • supports metabolism

  • strengthens immune function

  • increase blood flow

  • boosts lactation

  • flush toxins in the gut

  • reduces gas and bloating

Meals incorporate many cleansing herbs and warming spices like ginger, fenugreek, fennel, turmeric, cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper, mustard seed, saffron, cumin and coriander. Spices support metabolism, blood flow, boost lactation, and naturally flush toxins from the gut which helps to reduce gas, bloating in mom and indigestion in baby, exhibited in symptoms like colic or elimination dysfunction.

How Does It Work?

First set-up your initial consultation - Link to book recommended at 24-34 weeks of pregnancy. Just as no 2 constitutions are alike in Ayurveda, each mama client is catered to as unique individuals with personalized meal plans. While the Postpartum Ayurveda Meal Program operates from a prescribed menu structure, each person’s body might need slightly different ingredients and meals are based on dietary restrictions, pre-existing conditions, food aversions, pregnancy cravings, allergies etc…

The initial consultation is an intake with Chef Ry to better understand each client individually and to also give a mama the opportunity to ask any questions and receive emotional support through this huge transition. After all, this is a Doula service; Ry becomes part of your mom village of informational, dietary, and spiritual support through the 4th trimester.

After Birth

Once baby is born, and you’ve had a consultation with Ry, you will be fed and nurtured through food postpartum. Meals are delivered on a bi-weekly basis on 2-10 week plans depending on each clients needs. Expect foods that counter Vata (VATA DOSHA = air, ether, space); Avoiding foods that are cold, airy and dry is key. You’ll receive:

  • Comforting meals of kitchari, dal, soups and vegetables intended to be warmed, made from scratch with healthy fats and oils that increase ojas and support brain function. Some animal proteins are integrated depending on client.

  • High fiber, lactation inducing and grounding breakfast foods like pancakes, muffins, porridge, oatmeals and fruit compotes. Also included is lactation cookies.

  • A medicinal ghee infused with Ayurveda herbs, postpartum tea, and a specially formulated “Mama Mylk” made with Almond milk, infused with herbs that decrease anxiety and boost lactation.

  • You also receive a PDF guide that stipulates foods to favor vs. avoid with suggested meal ideas to assist you in preparing your home kitchen postpartum.

We focus on a diet high in protein, fiber, antioxidants, phytonutrients, thats anti-inflammatory and easy for the digestive system to breakdown. After childbirth, a woman's digestive fire (agni) is extremely weak making it harder to process food and absorb nutrients. This can affect weight, mood, liver and breakdown of fats, lactation and subsequently baby's digestion when nursing. Good nutrition creates a chain reaction throughout the entire body and is the building blocks to wellness, bringing your system back into balance.
